Petrographic examinations provide information about the physical and chemical characteristics of a material. It also describes and classifies a material’s constituents and is often used to compare samples from one source to another.
During petrographic examinations, the rocks, minerals and other components are carefully examined utilizing optical means. Other tools used during testing procedures may include electron microprobe analysis, chemical analysis by atomic absorption and X-ray fluorescence.
X-ray diffraction may also be used to analyze individual grains from a sample. Microscopic fluid analysis can also provide valuable information about the materials being tested.
Petrographic examination methods include:
- • Macroscopic Characteristics
- • Microscopic Characteristics
- • Component Separation
- • Chemical Analysis
- • Specific Gravity
